Our planet is getting instrumented – everything from power plants to traffic levels and weather is being measured and analyzed. Meanwhile, social media is changing both our personal and our social interactions providing a rich opportunity for data generation and analysis. Finally, mobile phones are becoming central consolidation points for everything from communication to finances and communication, generating high volumes of geo and interaction data. All these trends lead to incredible increase in data volumes and focus on data analytics. As a result, we have seen a plethora of new technologies including Big Data and Hadoop, Real-time analytics, in-memory database appliances, NoSQL databases and a variety of other exciting developments. This talk will focus on challenges and opportunities of the new Big Data-fueled world. We would also focus on research topics relating to these fields that interest us.
Speaker Profile:
Alex Gorelik leads platform development at Informatica, the largest data integration vendor in the world. Prior to Informatica, Alex was an IBM Distinguished Engineer for Information Integration team at IBM. He is a former founder and CTO of Exeros (acquired by IBM in 2009). He has spent over 25 years developing cutting edge data-integration technology. From 1995 to 2001, Alex was co-founder, CTO and VP of Engineering at Acta Technology (acquired by Business Objects in 2002 and marketed as Business Objects Data Integrator). Prior to Acta, Alex managed the development of the Replication Server product at Sybase and worked on Sybase's strategy for enterprise application integration (EAI). Earlier, he worked on database kernels at Amdahl Design Automation group. Alex holds a BS in Computer Science from Columbia University School of Engineering and a Masters in Computer Science from Stanford University. Sanjeev Kumar is responsible for leading Informatica's India R&D Labs (a.k.a. "iLabs") as Vice President and Managing Director. In this role Sanjeev is responsible for formulating the vision and strategy for iLabs, to bring about improvements relating to innovation and scale of delivery. In addition to center-wide responsibilities, Sanjeev is also responsible for managing the product development for Messaging Business Unit in India.Prior to Informatica, Sanjeev was the General Manager for WebLogic Integration product (WLI) and head of BEA System's India R&D Center in Bangalore. Prior to BEA India, Sanjeev was the General Manager for BEA's AquaLogic Data Services Platform product (ALDSP) in San Jose, California. Prior to his move to India in July 2006, Sanjeev was based in Silicon Valley, California for over sixteen years that included a variety of engineering, product management and pre-sales roles at Oracle in Server Technologies (database and application server divisions), Object Design and Versant Object Technology. Sanjeev has a master's degree from Rutgers University and a bachelors' degree from Birla Institute of Technology & Science Pilani, both in Computer Science.
