Title: Development of Real World Sensor Network Applications

As wireless sensor network (WSN) nodes need to be highly optimized, it has to be tightly coupled to the application needs and environment. This makes it very challenging to develop application where environment is also challenging. We discuss four different sensor network system, we are developing for tracking of wildlife. Two of these are based on tracking of animals by placing a sensor node on the animal's body. As the animals are mobile and move through the forest, the nodes not only face intermittent wireless linkages but also have to survive difficult conditions. One of them uses GPS as location sensor, while the other one infers location from RF signal strength. Other two use Image Sensor and Acoustic Sensor to collect information about movement and habitat of animals. These nodes are not on the body of animal but generate large data volume due to nature of sensing mechanism. This makes it more challenging to manage data and reduce them locally on the node to minimize energy loss on communication. Moreover handling of such large data volume on resource constrained nodes requires new design methodology. Other area of application, we discuss in this talk is application of WSN to planetary exploration. While there has been talk of utilizing WSN in planetary exploration, we are yet to see a single one being deployed. We discuss challenges we are facing in developing two applications for Lunar Exploration and the way we are trying to overcome them. One of them is setting up a Seismic Sensor Networks while the other one is using WSN concept to discover water distribution in Permanently Shadowed Region of moon. Another application area, we would discuss in this is to apply sensor network technology to helping differently abled persons an improved quality of life. In particular, we would focus on our development of Environment Control System based on body part movements, speech and brainwaves monitoring to cater to different ability groups.
