Title: Secure Query Processing on the Cloud

The cloud has evolved into a critical infrastructure component for many enterprise and consumer services. However, the benefits of cloud computing do not come for free. Perhaps the most significant concern with executing applications on the cloud is security. The execution environment on the cloud cannot be trusted due to the presence of malicious applications that share the same physical resources and the cloud operator who can observe and tamper with an application's execution. In this talk, I will describe an architecture for securely executing database applications in untrusted environments. The architecture uses existing partially homomorphic encryption schemes to push as much computation on untrusted servers as possible. Any computation that cannot be performed securely on encrypted data is delegated to a trusted client. I will describe a query processing engine that uses static analysis to automatically retarget existing applications to this architecture. I will also discuss various challenges in optimizing distributed query execution while preserving security.
Speaker Profile:
Kapil Vaswani is a researcher with the Programming Languages and Tools group at Microsoft Research. He is broadly interested in programming language abstractions and tools that simplify the design and implementation of concurrent and distributed systems. He graduated from the department of Computer Science and Automation at the Indian Institute of Science where he worked on efficient and accurate profiling and performance modeling techniques.
