*About Enrique Peñalosa:* Enrique Peñalosa, a visionary thinker who is in the league of the world's greatest city leaders, is the President of the Board of Directors of Institute for Transportation and Development policy (ITDP) and has been closely associated with ITDP for over a decade and a half. At the turn of the 21st century, Mr. Peñalosa, as the Mayor of Bogotá, Colombia, developed a model for urban improvement based on all citizens having equal access to quality transportation, education and public spaces. He was behind the transformation of Bogotá, which was once infested with crime, drugs and pollution, into a city that now is celebrated worldwide as a model of urban renewal. He was instrumental in creating the first truly high quality and high capacity Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), TransMilenio BRT. Today, TransMilenio has a daily ridership of 18 million passenger trips per day on an 82 km network of trunk lines supported by feeder services. Eventually, the system will have a network of 388 kilometres and will provide convenient access to 85% of the population and handle around 5.5 million passenger trips per day. ITDP has been intensively engaged in various programs across India for over a decade and a half. Its programs include integration of public transit systems, BRT design and implementation, improved public transit access through high quality pedestrian footpaths and dedicated cycling infrastructure, and pedestrian only zones to create vibrant urban areas. ITDP is providing assistance to various government agencies in the cities and the states of Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Jharkhand as well as the Ministry of Urban Development, Government of India.
