Title: Resource Management on Clouds: For Enterprise and Data Intensive Computing to Management of Smart Facilities

Providing computing, storage, and data resources as well as instruments and software tools on demand to clients is an important trend in current distributed systems. Clouds that provide an infrastructure for achieving these objectives are popular among various types of users that range from enterprises and scientific and engineering communities to stake holders of smart facilities. The ability to grow and shrink a resource pool dynamically and the “pay as you go” model that allows a client to pay only for its resource usage and avoid the commitment of its funds for resource acquisition and maintenance are responsible for the rapidly spreading use of cloud computing. In addition to enterprise and scientific computing a cloud is also being considered for the management of smart facilities that include sensor equipped bridges, buildings and industrial machinery. Unification of geographically dispersed resources and tools for the analysis of both sensor data as well as archived data on facility maintenance is an integral part of smart facilities management. An effective management of resources is crucial for meeting the quality of service requirements of clients that are often captured in service level agreements (SLAs) as well as reducing costs and generating adequate revenue for the resource service provider. Performing resource management for supporting both compute and data intensive applications increase the complexity of the problem. This talk will address the challenges associated with this multi-faceted resource management problem and discuss available solutions including: • Resource management techniques for supporting data analytics that is important both in the context of enterprise applications as well as smart facilities management. Resource managers for providing a guaranteed quality of service for using a “MapReduce” service on a cloud will be discussed. • Auto-scaling techniques that exploit the elasticity provided by a cloud in dynamic resource provisioning for achieving a desired grade of service and generating an adequate revenue for the service provider. • Robust resource management methods for handling uncertainties associated with the workload and local policies deployed at a large number of diverse resources. Examples from the domain of enterprise and scientific computing as well as smart facilities management will be presented.
Speaker Profile:
Shikharesh Majumdar is a Professor and the Director of the Real Time and Distributed Systems Research Centre at the Department of Systems and Computer Engineering at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada. He represents Carleton University in the board managing the Huawei-TELUS Centre of Innovation for Enterprise Cloud Services that focuses on collaborative research among Huawei, TELUS and Carleton. Dr. Majumdar is a member of the faculty team actively involved with Carleton University’s Canada-India Centre for Excellence. He holds a Ph.D. degree in Computational Science from University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Canada. His research interests are in the areas of cloud and grid computing, operating systems, middleware and performance evaluation. Dr. Majumdar actively collaborates with the industrial sector and has performed his sabbatical research at Nortel and Cistech. He is the area editor for the Simulation Modelling Practice and Theory journal published by Elsevier. Dr. Majumdar is a member of ACM and IEEE and was a Distinguished Visitor for the IEEE Computer Society from 1998 to 2001.
