Title: IIT-NIT Joint Seat Allocation 2015: An algorithmic perspective
Prof. Sharat Chandran, I.I. T Bombay

2015 was a watershed moment in the allocation of highly competitive undergraduate engineering seats post 12th standard. Preference lists common to about 80+ institutions across 600 engineering programs were sought from approximately 13 lakh qualified candidates; yet there were three different (potentially contrasting) merit lists based on the IIT Advanced Examination, the Joint Entrance Examination (mains), and the Joint architecture entrance examination. Further, IIT aspirants were, for the first time, given the opportunity to freeze, float or slide across multiple counselling rounds (or offers) of admission. I will describe the algorithmic and engineering challenges and methods that were employed for Joint Seat Allocation 2015. Novel feature of our multi-run deferred acceptance algorithm includes the ability to handle seat guarantee across multiple rounds, reservation, and de-reservation rules, escalation of ranks due to revision of marks by state boards, and last minute de-recognition of other backward caste categories. (Joint work with Surender Baswana, Yashodan Kanoria, and Utkarsh Patange)
