CSE Department, IIT Bombay, Annual Report 2005-2006

Introduction

In the academic year 2005-2006, the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) continued maintaining its leadership among peer institutions of its kind. With 24 faculty and 39 research scholars on its roll, CSE, IIT Bombay also continued as the largest and most active research program in the country. Our research students won award given by IBM for outstanding Research Scholars and our faculty were awarded the INAE Young Engineer and distinguished Alumnus award from IIT, Madras.

Academic Programmes

The department admitted 35 students in the B.Tech program, 55 students in the M.Tech program, 03 students for the Ph.D program and 22 students for the Dual Degree program. Degrees were awarded to 36 B.Tech students, 58 M Tech students, 15 Dual Degree student, 5 MS students and 1 Ph.D.student. The department continued to receive attractive fellowships for its M.Tech, and Ph.D programs from the industry with 2 M.Tech fellowships from MISYS, 4 Ph.D. fellowships from Infosys, 1 M.Tech, 1 Dual Degree fellowships from VijayVashee, 2 Dual Degree from Vincent Fernandes donation and 1 Ph.D. Fellowship from Microsoft Research India and 1 Ph.D Fellowship from Bell Labs.

Workshop and other Events

The department organized major events this year.Symposium on Modeling and Shallow Parsing of Indian Languages organized by CFILT jointly with CIIL Mysore and C-DAC India held in IIT Bombay, 2nd to 4th April 2006, under the leadership of Prof. Pushpak Battacharya. IIT Bombay will coordinate the national initiative on R & D in Cross Lingual Information Access,(Indian Language to English and Indian Langauge to Indian Language), 12th April 2006. A workshop on SecNet 2006: 7th Computer and Network Security was leadership of Prof. Sivakumar.
