CSE Department, IIT Bombay, Annual Report 2002-2003.

In the academic year 2002-2003, the department of computer science and engineering (CSE) continued maintaining its leadership among peer institutions of its kind. With 25 faculty on its roll, CSE continued to have the largest faculty strength. The J.R. Isaac Chair Professorship was occupied by Prof. Supratik Chakraborty, and the Vijay Vashee chair professorship was occupied by Prof. Krithi Ramamritham.

The department also attracted researchers world wide. Prof. Alberto Mendelson from the University of Toronoto, Prof. Neelima Shrikhande from the Central Michigan University, and Prof. Kishor Trivedi from Duke University spent portions of their time at the CSE department.

Faculty members also were instrumental in organizing significantresearch conferences. Prof. Pushpak Bhatacharyya organized the conference on Universal Networking Language as Convenor, and Professor Krithi Ramamritham was the program chair for the IEEE conference on Data Engineering.

Four research scholars now hold Infosys fellowships. CSE students Navneet Loiwal, Varun Kacholia, and Vaibhav Mehta won the Asia regional ACM intercollegiate programming competition.

Academic Programs

The department admitted 35 students in the B.Tech program, 32 students in the M.Tech program, 4 students for the Ph.D program and 15 students for the Dual Degree program. Degrees were awarded to 38 B.Tech students, 56 M.Tech students and 3 doctoral students. The department continued to receive attractive fellowships for its B.Tech, M.Tech, and Ph.D programs from the industry with 2 B.Tech and 2 M.Tech fellowships from MISYS, 4 Ph.D. fellowships from Infosys, and 4 M.Tech fellowships from Hewlett Packard.
