CSE Department, IIT Bombay, Annual Report 2001-2002

Introduction

The department of computer science had two more new faculty joining during this year. The department has now the distinction of being the largest faculty in the country. Major laboratory enhancements were undertaken this year which include addition of servers and new machines to all the five research laboratories. The basic undergraduate laboratory was strenghtened by adding a new wing housing 60 new machines, with this upgradation the core course CS 101 would have around 100 machines simultaneous available for the first year students.

The Center for Indian Language Technologies moved to its new premises in the old building. The department is in the process of working out an MoU with National University of Singapore for faculty and student exchange and research collaborations. HP india has given four fellowships to M. Tech students of the department. The department presently has three Infosys Research scholars.

The department had several distinguished visitors who gave talks in the department. The visibility of the department at the international level is on the rise and we had Prof. Jeff Edmonds from Canada spending his sabaatical leave with us for 6 months. Two other distinguished visitors from USA are likely to spend thei sabaatical next year.

The department received two major donations from alumni this year.
Mr.Vincent Fernandes[Alumnus,B.Tech.(Electrical Engineering),1975] donation ($244,058.60)be utilized towards (a)Instituting a chair for a young faculty member in the Computer Science and Engineering Department, in the name of Prof.J.R.Isaac(his teacher and mentor, who superannuated from this Institute in April 1990), (b)starting M.Tech. scholarships in the names of Dr.George B.Fernandes, and Dr.Winifred A Fernandes. Mr.Vijay Vashee [Alumnus, B.Tech(Electrical Engineering), 1975] has donated securities worth $360,000 to the IIT Bombay Heritage Fund, to promote academic excellence in Computer Science and Engineering , establishment of an Endowed Chair, Student fellowhips, and Awards for Excellence in Research, in Computer Science and Engineering.

Academic Programmes

The department of Computer Science and Engineering offers an undergraduate B. Tech. program, an M. Tech. program, an M.S. program, and a Ph. D. program. The M. Tech. is a second level and flexible program in CSE. It permits a student to specialize in areas such as theoretical computer science, algorithms, combinatorics, programming languages, databases, data mining, machine intelligence, networks, hypertext information retrieval, architecture, parallel computing, distributed computing, graphics and object oriented systems.

The department admitted 35 students in the B. Tech. program, 32 students in the M. Tech. program, 4 students for the Ph.D. program and 15 students for the Dual Degree program. The department continued to receive attractive fellowships for its B.Tech and Ph.D programs from the Industry with 2 B.Tech fellowships from MISYS, 3 Ph.D. fellowships from Infosys , 1 Ph.D. felloship from TCS and 4 M.Tech fellowships from Hewlett Packard.
