Title: What is Research?

Description: Speaker: Prof. Uday Khedker

Time: Wednesday, 11 October 2017, 6:00pm
Venue: F C Kohli Auditorium, 1st Floor, CSE, KR Bldg.

There is some element of mystery about research in the minds of the
people who have not been involved in it. Those who do research are in a
habit of continuously evaluating their work on an implicit understanding
of what they believe to be good research. However, for many of them,
research is a way of life so obvious that they are unable to articulate
it from the view point of novices.

This talk is an outcome of a series of such introspections and the
discussions resulting from them. It attempts to explicate the implicit
understandings of what research is and tries to position it in the
larger context of intellectually stimulating and satisfying technical
career. In particular, it describes the pre-requisites of research, the
pains and pleasures of the process of research, and discusses the
personal factors influencing research. It also touches upon research in
the industrial context.

The talk presents general concepts using a series of views illustrated
by examples taken from commonly celebrated success stories in science
and engineering. Hence the talk is accessible to a wide audience.
