A brief history of Fortran:
- In April 1957 IBM started delivery of its IBM Mathematical FORmula
TRANslation system, FORTRAN, the first high level programming
language.
- By 1963 over 40 different compilers existed.
- In 1966 the American National Standards Institute, ANSI, ratified
its first standard for FORTRAN. In 1980 this was replaced by a new
standard, FORTRAN 77.
- By the mid 1980's FORTRAN 77 became the 'universal' dialect.
- 1991 saw the publication of the Fortran 90 standard and compilers
are now available. New programs should be Fortran 90.
- Fortran 95
