JTA's please read the following before goint for your first lab-session

This week (jul 31 to aug 5) is critical for cs101 as it will be the first lab session for both JTAs and students. So, please remember the following & try your best to make the lab a success..

1. arrive in the lab 10 minutes BEFORE.
2. login on 1 machine for yourself and start X, netscape.
3. keep a window (rxvt) for telnet to kailash.
   • login to kailash (your normal cse account)
   • type rlogin parvati -l cs101tas from kailash
   • then cd bin
   • there will be a command here chpwd which is to be used for setting passwords of students.
4. when students come ask them to sit at a terminal and then come to you one by one. their login name is n[ROLLNUMBER] example n00005032 (remember if Dual degree there is a capital D in the roll number --- n00D05012 -- for example) when the student comes type chpwd n[ROLL NUMBER] and ask him to enter his password (twice without mistake). then he can go to his terminal and login.
5. after loggin in ask him to do startx
6. then from cs101 home page ask students to follow link for Lab Assignment and begin working.
7. also ask them to start a terminal (rxvt) by using click of mouse and choosing rxvt.
8. ask them to POWER off monitors before leaving. not machines.
9. at 11pm all CS101 students MUST leave. Until 11pm no non-CS101 student is allowed.

At 11pm if no others are around, Junior TAs must LOCK the lab and return the keys to watchman. All Junior TAs with 8:30-11pm slot must meet Mrs. Date in old S/w lab (she is usually there from 2:30-5pm) and you can go ask her whenever you are free. and learn the rules for LOCKING the lab. She will give you clear instructions. Remember-- some machines may be slow. some mouse may not be ok. ask such students NOT TO PANIC and that they will get sufficient time this week and next week to get comofortable. Finally, if you face any major problems you can call me at 7725 (office) or 8725 (home) for help as a last resort. Also, you must email any problems/suggestions to cs101jtas@cse.iitb.ernet.in with a copy to siva@cse.iitb.ernet.in so that your colleagues will face less trouble. Also, for the first week ALONE- you must go for 30 minutes on the next day also to help out your colleague. that is, if your slot is tue night 6 - 8:30 pm, then your colleague who did duty on mon night 6 - 8:30 will be with you for the first 30 minutes. similarly, you must go back to the lab on wed night at 6pm and help your colleague for 30 mins. This is for the first week ONLY. for the MONday TAs, a couple of senior TAs will help in the first half hour.
