Instructions to JTA's before going for your first
lab-session
This week (Aug 4 - 8) is critical for cs101 as it will
be the first lab session for both JTAs and students. So, please
remember the following & try your best to make the lab a success..
-
arrive in the lab 10 minutes BEFORE.
-
login on 1 machine for yourself and start X, netscape.
- login to parvati as rlogin -l cs101tas parvati
- Then type cd bin at shell prompt.
-
when students come ask them to sit at a terminal and
then come to you one by one.
their login name is z[ROLLNUMBER] example z00005032
(remember if Dual degree there is a capital D in the
roll number --- 000D05012 -- for example)
In that case, D is replaced by d.
when the student comes type
chpwd z[ROLL NUMBER]
and ask him/her to enter password (twice without mistake).
then he/she can go to any terminal and login.
-
after logging in ask them to do
startx
-
then from cs101 home page
ask students to try the unix commands given in sheet.
-
also ask them to start a terminal (rxvt) by
using click of mouse and choosing rxvt.
-
ask them to POWER off monitors before leaving. not machines.
-
at 11pm all CS101 students MUST leave.
Until 11pm no non-CS101 student is allowed.
Key Transfer Rules
- Junior TAs can enter any machine complaints in the compalint
register kept on the table in OSL.
- TA coming at 6:00 should get Lab keys from watchman at CSE Department
ground floor beside Seminar Hall. After getting keys, they must enter
their name and arrival time in the key transfer register kept on the table in OSL.
- TA arrived at 6:00 must wait for the other TA coming at 8:30. If
any of the TAs at 8:30 arrives, then he/she must transfer the key to new TA
and leave the lab. For transferring the key, both TAs must make an entry
in the same register.
- TA at 11:00 should make an entry in the register as CLOSED and lock
the lab and return the keys to watchman.
- Before leaving, he/she must switch off all the lights in the lab(not A/Cs).
Remember-- some machines may be slow. some mouse may not be ok.
ask such students NOT TO PANIC and that they will get sufficient
time this week and next week to get comofortable.
Also, you must email any problems/suggestions to cs101stas@cse.iitb.ac.in with a copy to
pb@cse.iitb.ernet.in so that your colleagues will face less
trouble.
For the first week, senior TAs will help you.
