Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) monitor network traffic for suspicious activity and send alerts, while Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS) actively block detected threats, enhancing network security by preventing unauthorized access. Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) and Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS) are crucial components of modern network security architectures. An IDS is designed to monitor network traffic for suspicious activities or policy violations and generate alerts when such events are detected. This system acts passively, only notifying administrators of potential issues without taking direct action to block the threat. The IDS relies on various detection methods, such as signature-based detection, which looks for known attack patterns, and anomaly-based detection, which identifies deviations from normal behavior. In contrast, an IPS takes a more active role in network security. It not only monitors and detects potential threats like an IDS but also takes immediate action to block malicious traffic. When an attack is identified, the IPS can drop malicious packets, block traffic from the source IP address, or reset connections to prevent the threat from infiltrating the network. This proactive approach helps to minimize the risk of successful attacks.
