Faculty

Preethi Jyothi

Preethi is an Assistant Professor in the CSE department. She was a Beckman Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign from 2013-2016. She received her Ph.D. in computer science from The Ohio State University. She obtained a B.Tech from the National Institute of Technology, Calicut in 2006 where she was awarded the Institute Gold Medal in computer science.

Her research interests are broadly in the areas of machine learning as applied to speech and exploring the interaction between speech and text. Her Ph.D. thesis dealt with statistical learning methods for pronunciation models. Her work on this topic received a Best Student Paper Award at Interspeech, 2012. She co-organised a research project on probabilistic transcriptions at the 2015 Jelinek Summer Workshop on Speech and Language Technology. For this work, her team received a Speech and Language Processing Student Paper Award at ICASSP 2016. Since joining IITB, she was awarded a Google Faculty Research Award 2017 for her proposal on accented speech recognition. She also led a team that received the "Best Project" award at Microsoft Research India’s Summer Workshop on Artificial Social Intelligence in 2017.



Graduate Students


Vinit Unni

Vinit is a 3rd year Ph.D. student. At CSALT, he is working on domain adversarial techniques applied to speech and language processing. His general research interests are in the areas of ML/AI, multi-agent systems/swarm and robotics. In his spare time, Vinit enjoys reading fiction, watching DnD streams and listening to music.



Nikhil Saini

Nikhil is a 3rd-year M.Tech RA CSE student. Currently, he is working on spoken machine translation. He is co-advised by Pushpak Bhattacharyya and Preethi. His general research interests include deep learning in speech and NLP. In his free time, he's interested in sports (basketball, cricket, etc.) and also enjoys cooking occassionally.



Ankita Singh

Ankita is a 2nd-year M.Tech CSE student. She is co-advised by Kameswari Chebrolu and Preethi. She is working on a crowdsourcing platform to collect labeled speech for Indian languages. Her broad research interests are AI/ML, blockchain technologies and HCI. In her spare time, he enjoys traveling, playing foosball, quora and watching TV sitcoms.



Jayaprakash Akula

Jayaprakash is a 2nd-year M.Tech. CSE student, jointly co-advised by Ganesh Ramakrishnan. He works on learning multimodal representations, specifically in the context of video captioning and video retrieval. His general research interests are in ML, NLP and Android app development. He enjoys traveling to new places, watching movies and playing cricket in his spare time.



Abhishek Thakur

Abhishek is a 2nd-year M.Tech. CSE student, jointly co-advised by Ganesh Ramakrishnan. He works on learning multimodal representations, specifically in the context of video captioning and video retrieval. His general research interests are in ML, Image processing and cryptography. In his free time, he enjoys playing video games.



Samrat Dutta

Samrat is a 2nd-year M.Tech. CSE student, jointly co-advised by Ganesh Ramakrishnan. He works on memory augmented models for neural machine translation. His general research interests are in ML and reinforcement learning. In his free time, he enjoys singing and playing (developing) video games.



Mayank Kothyari

Mayank is a 2nd-year M.Tech. CSE student, jointly co-advised by Ganesh Ramakrishnan. He works on video analytics. His general research interests are in ML, speech recognition and computer vision. In his spare time, he enjoys reading novels and watching shows on Netflix.

Harsh Deshpande

Harsh is a final year dual degree student in the B.Tech EE program. He works on voice conversion using generative models. His general research interests include NLP, speech and reinforcement learning. When he's not working, he enjoys playing football, watching anime and movies.



Archiki Prasad

Archiki is a fifth year DD student in the EE program. At CSALT, she is working on analyzing end-to-end models for ASR. Her general research interests include deep learning, signal processing and probability theory. When not at work, she enjoys listening to music and following international politics.



Anuj Jitendra Diwan

Anuj is a fourth year B.Tech. student in the CSE program. At CSALT, he is working on context-based recovery in ASR. His general research interests include probability theory, artificial Intelligence and algorithms. In his spare time, he enjoys reading and writing fiction, playing word games, and watching movies and TV shows.



Parikshit Bansal

Parikshit is a fourth year B.Tech. student in the CSE program. At CSALT, he is exploring multi-accented speech recognition. He is broadly interested in statistical methods for machine learning. When not working, he enjoys following tech news, going for a jog, watching asian dramas and writing articles.



Pranay Reddy Samala

Pranay is a 3rd year B.Tech. student in the CSE program. He is currently exploring semi-supervised learning for ASR at CSALT. His general research interests include deep learning, reinforcement learning and optimization algorithms. In his free time, he likes swimming and reading popular fiction.



Yash Sharma

Yash is a fourth year B.Tech. student in the CSE program. At CSALT, he is exploring transfer learning techniques for dialectal speech recognition. His general research interests include image processing and optimization algorithms. When he's not at work, he enjoys listening to Bollywood mix tapes and hanging out with his friends.



Drumil Trivedi

Drumil is a fourth year B.Tech. student in the CSE program. At CSALT, he is exploring code-switched translations and is co-advised by Prof. Sunita Sarawagi. His general research interests include NLP, speech and optimization algorithms for ML. In his spare time, he listens to instrumental music and likes to draw.



Tarang Jain

Tarang is a fourth year B.Tech. student in the Aerospace engineering program. At CSALT, he is working on building ASR systems for low-resource Indian languages. His general research interests include machine learning, deep learning, ASR, NLP and optimization. In his free time, he likes playing table tennis and chess and also enjoys running and cycling.



Mohammad Ali Rehan

Ali is a third year B.Tech. student in the CSE program. At CSALT, he is exploring models and probing techniques for code-switched data. He is broadly interested in machine learning in low-resource settings and cryptography. In his spare time, he enjoys reading, playing football and badminton.



Shreya Pathak

Shreya is a third year B.Tech. student in the CSE program. At CSALT, she is exploring models and probing mechanisms for code-switched Hindi-English data. Her general research interests include parameterized algorithms, multimodal learning and cryptography. When not working, she plays tennis, watches sitcoms, listens to music and reads novels.



Yash Gupta

Yash is a third year B.Tech. student in the CSE program. At CSALT, he is working on the problem of abstractive summarization. He is broadly interested in machine learning and algorithms. In his spare time, he enjoys running, watching TV shows and listening to music.

  • Minali is a 3rd year M.Tech. CSE student. She is working on accent adaptation for speech recognition. Her general research interests include topics related to speech processing and deep learning. In her free time, she enjoys outdoor activities like swimming and playing squash.

  • Arijit is a 2nd-year M.Tech CSE student. Currently, he is working on building question answer pairs to evaluate an education-based application in Hindi. He is jointly supervised by Pushpak Bhattacharyya and Preethi. His general research interests are in the areas of deep learning, reinforcement learning, computer vision and natural language processing. When he's not at work, Arijit enjoys watching movies and playing DotA.

    Arijit Mukherjee graduated in 2019, and joined Microsoft IDC in Hyderabad
  • Digvijay is a 2nd-year M.Tech. CSE student. He's working jointly with Pankaj on audio event detection and video summarization. He is jointly supervised by Ganesh Ramakrishnan and Preethi.     Digvijaysingh Gautam graduated in 2019, and joined Flipkart in Bengaluru

    Pankaj Joshi graduated in 2019, and joined Google in Bengaluru
  • Adarsh is a 2nd-year M.Tech CSE student. Currently, he is working on spoken machine translation. His general research interests are in the areas of deep learning and speech recognition. In his spare time, Adarsh likes playing hockey and watching Spanish football league La Liga.

  • Abhilash is a 2nd year M.Tech CSE student. For his MTP, he is working on transcribing lectures in Indian languages and tackling specific computational challenges associated with this domain (including code switching). His general research interests include speech recognition, deep learning and machine learning. In his spare time, Abhilash likes to play the keyboard, learn guitar and listen to western classical music. He also enjoys playing chess and traveling.

    Abhilash Panicker graduated in 2018, and joined the Samsung R&D Centre in Bengaluru
  • Abhinav is a 2nd year M.Tech CSE student. At CSALT, as part of his MTP, he works on adapting pronunciation and language models for specific dialects of a language. Whenever he gets time off, Abhinav likes to listen to EDM (the likes of Martin Garrix and David Guetta) and engage in some FPS (First Person Shooting) games.

  • Himanshu is a 2nd year M.Tech CSE student. He works on building acoustic models for dialectal speech in low resource settings for his MTP. His general research interests are in the areas of speech recognition and deep learning. Apart from work, Himanshu enjoys adventure sports, playing chess and watching movies.

    Himanshu Agarwal graduated in 2018, and joined Oracle India in Bengaluru
  • Sanket is a 2nd year MTech CSE student. He works on speech-to-speech translation for his MTP, under the joint supervision of Pushpak Bhattacharyya and Preethi. His general research interests include speech recognition, machine translation and machine learning in general. His hobbies include writing English poems and articles. Whenever he finds time, he also likes volunteering for NGOs.

  • Karan is a final year DD student in the EE program. At CSALT, he is working on code-switched speech recognition and voice conversion. He is interested in deep learning applied to speech, digital signal processing and probability theory.     Karan Taneja graduated in 2020, and will join the Ph.D. program at Georgia Institute of Technology
  • Ishan is a final year student in the B.Tech. CSE program. At CSALT, he is working on language modeling for low-resource languages and code-switched text. He is interested in deep learning, NLP and also wishes to explore reinforcement learning. In his spare time, he plays lawn tennis and enjoys reading fiction, particularly English and Russian classics.

    Ishan Tarunesh graduated in 2020, and joined Samsung R&D in Korea
  • Nitish is a final year student in the B.Tech. CSE program. At CSALT, he is working on question generation in low resource settings. His general research interests include natural language processing and deep learning. In his spare time, Nitish enjoys outdoor activities like cycling, trekking and wildlife photography.

  • Kartik is a final year B.Tech. CSE student. He is jointly advised by Prof. Sunita Sarawagi and Preethi. For his BTP, he's working on accented speech recognition using feature adaptation. His general research interests are in deep learning applied to problems in human-computer interaction. His hobbies include reading epic fantasy novels and watching sitcoms.

    Kartik Khandelwal graduated in 2020, and joined Samsung R&D in Korea
  • Syamantak is a final year B.Tech. CSE student. At CSALT, he is doing an RnD project on learning better embeddings for code-switched text. His general research interests are in statistical models for computer vision, NLP and speech processing. His hobbies include playing squash, reading books and watching movies.

  • Tanuj worked (along with Bhavesh) on end-to-end spoken translation. His general research interests include topics in AI, ML and databases. In his spare time, Tanuj enjoys watching movies (primarly from the twentieth century), watching sports and playing lawn tennis.

    Tanuj Kaza graduated in 2019, and joined Google in Bengaluru
  • Kalpesh, as part of his BTP, worked on neural language models and constraint-driven learning. His general research interests include natural language processing, computer graphics and digital circuits. In his spare time, he likes cycling, star gazing, collecting Rubiks puzzles and building developer communities. He led the Web and Coding Club at IIT Bombay in 2016-17. He maintains a GitHub page and has a StackOverflow profile.

    Kalpesh Krishna graduated in 2018, and joined the Ph.D. program at the Computer Science Department, University of Massachusetts Amherst
  • Saurabh was in the B.Tech CSE program. At CSALT, he has dabbled with end-to-end ASR systems and is currently doing an RnD project on the generation and detection of code-switching in speech. His broad research interests are primarily in natural language processing and deep learning. He is also interested in Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods for sampling in high dimensional spaces. During his spare time, he likes to play chess or go on an outing.

    Saurabh Garg graduated in 2018, and joined the Ph.D. program at Carnegie Mellon University
  • Tanmay was in the B.Tech CSE program. For his BTP, he is working on code-switching in speech. More generally, his interests are in natural language processing and adversarial game modeling. In his free time, Tanmay plays football and basketball and he also enjoys writing poetry.

  • Suman was in the B.Tech CSE program. For his BTP, he is working on crowdsourcing for speech transcriptions in Indian languages under the joint supervision of Kameswari Chebrolu and Preethi.   • Rajat was in the B.Tech CSE program. For his BTP, along with Suman, he is working on crowdsourcing for speech transcriptions in Indian languages.   • Mohit was in the B.Tech CSE program. As part of his BTP, he is currently working on improving non-native accent identification from speech. His general research interests are in NLP and speech recognition. During his spare time, Mohit enjoys playing table tennis, watching movies and hanging out with friends.
