Faculty

Preethi Jyothi

Preethi is an Associate Professor in the CSE department. She was a Beckman Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign from 2013-2016. She received her Ph.D. in computer science from The Ohio State University. She obtained a B.Tech from the National Institute of Technology, Calicut in 2006 where she was awarded the gold medal for being the top graduating student in computer science.

Her research interests are broadly in the areas of machine learning as applied to speech and exploring the interaction between speech and text. Her Ph.D. thesis dealt with statistical learning methods for pronunciation models. Her work on this topic received a Best Student Paper Award at Interspeech, 2012. She co-organised a research project on probabilistic transcriptions at the 2015 Jelinek Summer Workshop on Speech and Language Technology. For this work, her team received a Speech and Language Processing Student Paper Award at ICASSP 2016. Since joining IITB, she was awarded a Google Faculty Research Award 2017 for her proposal on accented speech recognition. She also led a team that received the "Best Project" award at Microsoft Research India’s Summer Workshop on Artificial Social Intelligence in 2017. She currently serves on the ISCA SIGML board and is a member of the Editorial Board of Computer Speech and Language.

Graduate Students


Vinit Unni

Vinit is a final year Ph.D. student. At CSALT, he is working on domain adaptation techniques for ASR. His general research interests are in the areas of ML/AI, multi-agent systems/swarm and robotics. In his spare time, Vinit enjoys reading fiction, watching DnD streams and listening to music.



Barah Fazili

Barah is a 4th-year Ph.D. student in the CSE department. Her thesis focuses on building improved computational models for code-switched data. Her general research interests span applied ML in NLP, representation learning and conversational AI. When not working, she enjoys reading non-fiction (mostly self-help books), going for a walk or cooking.



Ashish Mittal

Ashish is a third year Ph.D. student jointly co-advised with Prof. Sunita Sarawagi. He is currently focusing on building computational models for speech and NLP in low-resource settings. His general research interests include domain adaptation, representation learning and few-shot learning. In his free time, he enjoys hiking, going for long drives and playing badminton.



Sona Elza Simon

Sona is a second year Ph.D. student. Her thesis will focus on cross-lingual transfer for low-resource languages. Her general research interests include NLP and conversational AI. When not doing research, she reads books, enjoys painting, cycling and swimming.



Sanjeev Kumar

Sanjeev is a second year Ph.D. student. He works on shallow NLP for extremely low-resource Indian languages. His general research interests include ML in NLP. In his spare time, he watches documentaries, reads books and hangs out with his friends.



Ashish Sunil Agrawal

Ashish is a 2nd year MS CSE student. At CSALT, he works on improving computational models for code-switched and multilingual NLU. His broad interests include applied ML in NLP, computer vision and interpretable AI. When not working, he enjoys watching documentaries, sitcoms, playing tennis and cricket and keeping up with the latest in technology.



Saurabh Kumar

Saurabh is a final year M.Tech. student jointly co-advised by Prof. Ganesh Ramakrishnan. He works on building generative models for speech in Indian languages. He is also interested in fairness in speech/NLP and voice cloning. When not working, he plays table tennis or goes for long walks.



P S V N Bhavani Shankar

Bhavani is a final year M.Tech. student jointly co-advised by Prof. Pushpak Bhattacharyya. He works on disfluency correction and code-switched ASR. He is broadly interested in NLP, ASR and generative AI. During his spare time, he enjoys listening to music, watching documentaries and reading fiction.



Dhiraj Kumar Sah

Dhiraj is a final year M.Tech. student. He works on multilingual ASR and language identification. His broad research interests include speech and NLP, deep learning, generative models and applied algorithms. During his spare time, he enjoys reading, quizzing and taking long walks.



Yashwant Singh Parihar

Yashwant is a final year M.Tech. student jointly co-advised by Prof. Ganesh Ramakrishnan. He works on fairness in speech and NLP. He is broadly interested in NLP, ASR and generative models. During his spare time, he enjoys cooking and listening to podcasts.



Abhishek Kumar Gupta

Abhishek is a second year M.Tech. student and working on accented speech processing. His broad research interests include ML for text and speech and reinforcement learning. When not working, he plays PC games, watches anime/TV shows and enjoys cycling and listening to music.



Vishal Tapase

Vishal is a second year M.Tech. student, jointly supervised by Prof. Ganesh Ramakrishnan and working on post-editing using LLMs. His broad research interests include LLMs, machine translation and other NLP applications. During his leisure time, he enjoys watching movies, sports and sleeping.

Soumen Kumar Mondal

  • Kalpesh, as part of his BTP, worked on neural language models and constraint-driven learning. His general research interests include natural language processing, computer graphics and digital circuits. In his spare time, he likes cycling, star gazing, collecting Rubiks puzzles and building developer communities. He led the Web and Coding Club at IIT Bombay in 2016-17.   • Saurabh was in the B.Tech CSE program. At CSALT, he has dabbled with end-to-end ASR systems and is currently doing an RnD project on the generation and detection of code-switching in speech. His broad research interests are primarily in natural language processing and deep learning. He is also interested in Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods for sampling in high dimensional spaces. During his spare time, he likes to play chess or go on an outing.
