Modeling drape behaviour of cloth

The project was done by N.
Damodharan under the guidance of Prof. Sharat Chandran.
The goal is to model the behavior of drape in cloth. The main objective
here is to define object beneath and model dynamics and draping behavior
of cloth on them.
A typical example here would be to observe cloth draping when laid on a
dining table or an easy-chair.
The approach here is to use Particle-systems [Breen et al.] to model this
behavior.
Cloth (is supposedly a complex mechanism) is a net of wefts and warps woven
across each other, and every such intersection is modeled as a particle.
In general particle systems have been used to model fire,flocks of birds
flying, or a school of fishes swimming or model natural scenes like tree
and grass.
The particles in our model possess all physical-properties of that of the
cloth as a whole and this helps us introduce constraint in formulation
of Energy functions for stretching bending,trellising etc. These functions
shall be minimized with the help of differential equations that model particle
dynamics.
We have enhanced the model to handle resistance offered by air. We have
approximated a parabolic curve to calculate the pressure distribution at
any given panel of the cloth.
To visualize the model after the cloth comes to equilibrium a simple B-Spline
visualization model has been constructed.
Typical applications of this project is in the garment industry where the
automation of design and visualization process can be enhanced with the
above technique. Also the project can find applications in fashion design
and other textile design packages.
