Sukhwinder's Saga..

A fairly healthy , cheerful, funloving male, Sukhwinder proved the exception to what many people thought, was the rule ; namely, thyroid stuff mostly happened to women .

Born to a middle class family, Sukhwinder made the most of the opportunities that came his way as a result of staying in a big metro city. He was also culturally very involved with his community, participating in all the traditional celebrations and gaiety. By and by, he got married to a nice girl from his community, had children.

One fine day, it started with a headache. Later investigations revealed an elevated lipid profile. Triglycerides right UP THERE. LDL trying to catch up. HDL cowering somewhere in the 30's. He was advised to see a cardiologist. In India, if someone asks you to see a cardiologist, the whole family starts imagining desperate scenarios. Sukhwinders was no exception. They had all kinds of checkups and things were not too bad. The doctor advised statins.

Several months later, after disciplining himself vis-a-vis rich foods and rich lifestyles, and taking his medicine regularly, he got his lipid profile done again.

 HARDLY ANY CHANGE !!!

This was when he was advised by one of his medical friends to get his thyroid checked. Coincidentally, Sukhwinder, to whom music was an essential part of his cultural setup (he was a lead participant in bhangras etc) noticed that he was developing a hearing problem.

It turns out that he was HYPOTHYROID ! We still dont know if the hearing complaint was related to this. But the lipid stuff was definitely related to being hypo, and so was the inability of the statins to having any effect .

Three Months into being treated for hypo, Sukhwinder is already seeing some change. He is still very careful with his diet, and does his exercise. His Joie-de-vivre vis-a-vis his cultural activities, and the bhangra is very much intact. He does not feel so tired after he participates in his bhangras from time to time, and gets more stuff done suring an average day.

What can one say ? Other than , "LISTEN TO YOUR BODY". Tell your doctor about your observations and doubts. The remedy is very simple. And the earlier you do this the better off you are. What can we say , but Balle ! Balle!.......
