This is the checklist for today's Lab assignment !!
- Learning basic Unix commands
- Learning common editors like vi, so that u can create files to write into
- Using the browser, Netscape, to mainly browse through the cs101 site, where u will find all material for cs101 course and also the instructions.
- Learning to write mails using pine
- Run a small fortran program using the compiler f90
DO NOT WORRY, if you cannot complete all of this in your first lab slot. You can use your next lab slot, to complete it. Make sure you do learn all of this by the end of 2 lab slots, though!!!
Here are some small things that u can try out to get started with
UNIX, VI, Netscape and Fortran
(U can always click on Practice to learn step by step!!)
- A few UNIX commands
- man:
* type 'man man' on the prompt and read up the manual.
- ls, mkdir, pwd, date, cd:
* type 'ls' on the prompt and see what happens
* type 'man ls' on the prompt and look at the various options that ls
provides
* do the same things for 'mkdir', 'pwd', 'date', 'cd'.

- vi
* type 'vim first' on the prompt
(what u now see is the VI editor in front of u)
* press 'i'
(u r now in the insert mode, u can type in text now)
* to escape from insert mode press 'ESC'.
* to save the file and quit press ':wq'
* to just save the file press ':w'
* type 'man vim' for further details. Also ask ur TA for directions

- Browser:
Since you are on this page you know how to start a browser. Get familiar
with its functioning. All the instructions about the course can be found
here. You will also find online notes here, so it is important that you
become familiar with Netscaping.
* Try to see whether you can go back to the home page and follow the
link to the Student FAQ's.
- To do this click on the "HOME" link at the bottom of the page and
then follow the link about "All CS101 students are required to go
through this".
* OK so now you are on the Rules page.
* Now open the 'vi' editor and type in the 6 rules which appear in bold.
(only the part which appears in bold has to be typed in)
* save this in a file named cs101Rules.
* mail this file to your respective TA(** ONLY ** to your own TA).
- Fortran

Similarly copy two more fortran programs from ~uma/fortran/,
* gcd1.f90
* seven_11.f90
Compile them and run them.
- Mails
Use Pine to check your mails. To use pine
* type 'pine' on the prompt(what you now see on the screen is the main
menu
* type 'c' to compose a mail
* type 'l' to see the folder list
* If u have still not mailed the file cs101Rules to your TA do so
now.
* press 'c' in pine to compose a message.
* type in your Name, Roll Number, JEE Rank in the mail.
* attach the file cs101Rules which you had created in VI.
(to attach a file go to the Attach option in the mail header and
press CRTL-J)
* you have to press CRTL-X to send the mail.
* mail this file to your respective TA(** ONLY ** to your own TA).
Look at the other options available to you and explore.
NOTE: Consult your TA whenever in doubt !!
