Veena Sahasrabuddhe was born Veena Shankar Bodas at Kanpur, India on 14
September 1948. She is married, with one son (born 1969) and one daughter (born
1972).
Summary
Veena is widely acclaimed today as a performer of the khayal style
of Indian classical singing and of moving bhajan devotional songs.
She is regularly invited to perform at the most prestigious events all
over India. Labels including HMV (EMI), BMG-Crescendo and Sony have
published a total of 40 albums of hers. Her music appeals to other musicians,
elders with decades of listening experience and schoolchildren alike, because
her music respects traditional values and is yet very
personal.
The roles of performer and teacher of music have always been equally
significant to her. While living on the campus at the Indian Institute of
Technology, Kanpur from 1968 to 1984,in Pune from 1990 to 2002 and at
IIT Bombay
from 2002 to 2005 she taught privately. In between she worked at
the department of music at the SNDT University's College of Arts and Commerce
for Women, Pune from June 1985 to September 1990. (She headed that department
for the last two academic years.)
During 2002-2004 she taught formal as well
as informal courses at
IIT Bombay
as Adjunct Professor.
As Artist-in-Residence at
IIT Kanpur
during March-April 2009, she taught
music
and conducted
lecture-demonstrations
.
Several of her students are being recognized for their art; some
already have commercial recordings to their credit.
Her goal is to continue propagating the music she loves in her dual roles
of teacher and performer.
