Overview

Overview and objective

Heritage carries the records of history of mankind– social, religious, cultural and political. So this is inherited from the past, and should be bestowed on the future for the benefit of subsequent generations. It is the legacy of tangible artefacts (e,g., monuments, statues, manuscripts, and paintings) and intangible attributes (e.g., customs, religion, culture, legends and history). The vulnerability of heritage items to the harmful effects of climate change, pollution, natural and man-made disasters, neglect, infiltration of new ideas and practices, vandalism and even mass tourism have become more evident. Thus, preservation, renovation, restoration and management of heritage properties have become an important task nowadays. However, the renovation work may cause damage to otherwise undamaged part of the artefacts and may fail to mimic the flavour of history. Sometimes this loss may be irrecoverable. Second, the heritage artefacts may not be physically accessible for renovation and restoration work due to various reasons. So it would be interesting to restore and reconstruct these artefacts digitally without physical contact to the monuments. Being re-rectifiable as well as inexpensive, the digital preservation, restoration and reconstruction of heritage items have become an active research field. This workshop is going to be organized with an aim to provide a common platform for curators of heritage sites, scholars, researchers and professionals to deliberate and exchange ideas to formulate and appreciate the problems and also the plausible solution technologies. We plan to arrange oral presentations by eminent scientists as well as contributory papers based on research experience. Theme of this edition of workshop is ‘Preservation and visualization’. Main topics of interest include, but not limited to

  1. Data acquisition in Cultural and Historical Landscapes and documentation technologies
  2. Integration of tangible and intangible components of culture
  3. Digital Reconstruction/Recreation of Heritage through 3D Reconstruction and Image Restoration
  4. Haptic rendering including sound synthesis
  5. Presentation of Heritage through Augmented Reality (AR)
  6. Storytelling in Virtual Reality (VR)
  7. Information Access and Extension for Manuscripts
  8. Digital preservation of ecological and underwater heritage
  9. Sounds-capes of Spoken Languages
  10. Capacity Building
    1. A Crowd-sourcing Platform, Big Data, Multimedia databases and digital libraries
    2. Development of a solution for automated data cleanup and filtering
    3. Development of Sensing and Actuation Technologies for Heritage Applications
