Title : Recognising Indic Scripts: Revisiting a Necessity

Bio: Santanu Chaudhury did his BTech (1984) and PhD (1989) from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur. He is currently serving as the Director of CSIR-Central Electronics Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-CEERI), Pilani. He was a Professor in the department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Delhi since 2000 and held the Schlumberger (2004-2009) and Dhanonjoy (2013-2016) Chair Professor position. He was awarded NSA medal for young scientists in 1993. He is a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineers (FNAE), Indian National Academy of Sciences (FNASc) and the International Association of Pattern Recognition (FIAPR). He has authored more than 260 research publications in leading national and international journals and refereed conference proceedings. He has co-authored a book titled "Multimedia Ontology: Representation and Applications" and has filed 12 patents. His research interests include Computer Vision, Embedded Systems and Machine Learning.

Recognising Indic Scripts: Revisiting a Necessity

Abstract : Recognising Indic scripts in printed or hand-written form is far from being a solved problem. There has been some concerted effort in recent times. We shall look into challenges addressed in those initiatives. We shall also look into recent deep learning based techniques developed in this space. At the end, some of the open issues and problems of Indic script recognition will be highlighted.
