Kulang : The highest climb in Sahyadri

The Kulang and the Chhota Kulang form one edge of the main range of the Sahyadris in the Igatpuri region. The Harish kapadia's book describes a route starting from Igatpuri. Kulang offers the highest climb from its base in the Sahyadris. One can see Madan, Kulang and chota kulang from Igatpuri Railway Station on Central Railway. The prominant peak among them is Kulang[height 1470 mts]. There are two ways to reach the upper plateau. Both start from Kulangwadi which is near the base of Kulang. the shorter one climbs up a nala between Kulang & chota Kulang, then eastward to the base of the final rocky staircase.the other route goes round a prominent rocky formation and climbs up from the valley at the foot of Kulang and Mandangad.Final one reaches the top after traversing the rock cut steps in the ridge coming out of this massif.. the climb is very steep & exhausting. Its difficult to climb.

We were seven this time, Me, Alhad, Rupesh, Gayatri, Trupti, Shweta and Aniruddha formed a nice trekking group. It took around 6 hrs for climb from Bhavli[the village near Igatpuri] to Kulang. We went by the route passing through chota kulang and kulang. and we came back to Bhavli in 5hrs 45 min with the other route which is a bit longer than the first one. We came back to Bhavli without any halt on the way.

At least 50 mountain tops including Kalsubai can be counted from Kulang. Kulang has ample amount of water tanks. From the top, we get nice views of Alang, Wilson dam, deep forest of Bhandardara, Ajoba and other such peaks near the south of Wilson dam. The actual top is very thin. There are some caves on the top before reaching Kulang, these are good for shelter in winter season. One should carry enough water with him because there is no water on the way to Kulang. There was some firewood available in the month of Nov on top but nothing can be guaranteed. Take a look at photographs as well
