Name of organization: Association for India’s Development (AID)

The Pedal Power Generator or Bijli Bike converts human power to electricity. A student pedaling can light up 2-3 classrooms using 11-18 W CFL lamps. AID conceived this idea for lighting village schools and supported developing a prototype in IIT-Bombay. After successful field testing they are being manufactured by Rashron Energy and Auto Limited, Vadodara and are available by mail-order to most states in India.

·     Cheaper solution than kerosene lanterns or oil wicks

Achievements: More than 30 generators to groups in several states including Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Gujarat have been dispatched. AID is subsidizing about 50 % of the costs for schools and NGOs working in villages without electricity.
