Call for Instructors

Dear Friends,

We wish to update you with an interesting opportunity that lies ahead for the PhD community to explore.

We are all aware of the stress and peer pressure that most first-year undergrads succumb to as they step into the campus life. Given the plethora of opportunities available in various extracurriculars, it is but tempting for most to blur the line between CURRICULAR and EXTRA-CURRICULAR activities. By the time they realize this mistake, viz., generally end of their 1st or 2nd year, it is little too late to academically recover from the resulting damage. We, at STUDe Club, strive to make a difference by helping the freshies prioritize their time and energy and guide them in their acads, making it a lot more interesting, stress-free and enjoyable for them to continue with their courses.

Starting the following semester, we are launching an initiative called Subject Overviews - bird's eye view, delivered by domain experts to freshies, of each course from the first year of undergraduate program, which are as follows:

  1. CS 101: Computer Programming and Utilization
  2. MA 105: Calculus
  3. HS 101: Economics
  4. CH 103: Chemistry
  5. PH 103: Electricity & Magnetism
  6. PH 105: Modern Physics
  7. PH 117: Physics Lab
  8. CH 117: Chemistry Lab
  9. ME 113: Workshop Practice
  10. ME 119: Engineering Graphics & Drawing
  11. IC 102: Data Interpretation and Analysis
With the bigger picture in mind, we hope the freshies will be lot more motivated and will appreciate a subject better, which is likely to translate into their exploring the subject further on their own. More than a good grade (which is likely to result as a side-effect) they will enjoy the pursuit of knowledge - a positive experience that they will carry lifelong. As instructors for these Subject Overviews, we request you to come forward and share your domain of expertise in one or more of the first-year undergraduate subjects (listed above). Your responsibilities, in this regard, for such course overviews will be as follows:
  • To inculcate a sense of appreciation and liking for the subject amongst the freshies, without undermining the importance of grades.
  • To touch upon the exciting applications of a subject, its importance in one's career, difficulty level, grading statistics, temperament required towards a subject, etc.
  • To caution them of the thumb-rule that the first-year coursework will form the foundation for rest of their stay in IIT and beyond.
  • To help them visualize the connection between the theoretical knowledge of a particular subject and its real-life applications, and thereby inspire them towards the subject.
All this can happen only with active participation from the PhD community, as we possess the perfect blend of in-depth knowledge of a subject, its applications, relevance and the teaching skills. Hence, to make it happen, we humbly request the enthusiastic research scholars to volunteer for the greater good of the student community, as a matter of tangibly giving back to IIT and to the society at large. To apply yourself or to nominate your friends for the same, please fill in this google form latest by Jun 30, 2011.

Looking forward to your response.

Thanks and Regards,
P2P STUDe Club Team.
