The Venue: Indian Institute of Technology Madras

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras IIT Madras is situated on Sardar Patel Road and is flanked by localities called Guindy, Adyar, Taramani and Velachery. The campus is half-way between the Raj Bhavan and the Adyar bus terminus. Other landmarks around the campus include the Guindy Snake Park, the Cancer Institute (Adyar) on one side of the IIT main gate and the Madhya Kailash temple on the other side. The campus is situated opposite to the Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI) campus and close to the Anna University - Guindy campus.

IIT Madras, recognized as an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India, is regarded as one of the finest institutions in India. It was founded in 1959 with technical and financial assistance from the Government of the erstwhile West Germany. Growing ever since it obtained its charter from the Indian Parliament in 1961, IIT Madras has established itself as a premier centre for teaching, research and industrial consultancy in the country.

IIT Madras is a residential institute that occupies a 2.5 square km campus that was formerly part of the adjoining Guindy National Park. The institute has nearly 360 faculty, 6,000 students and 1,250 administrative and supporting staff. The Institute has 15 academic departments and advanced research centers across various disciplines of engineering and pure sciences, with nearly 100 laboratories.

Much of the spectacular campus is a protected forest, carved out of the Guindy National Park and still remains largely wooded with a wide variety of flora and fauna. The campus remains home to a plethora of wildlife including the chital (spotted deers), black bucks, macaque monkeys, mongooses etc, co-existing with the human population.
