Phil Zimmermann

Philip Zimmermann is the creator of Pretty Good Privacy (PGP), the most widely used email encryption software in the world. He was the first to make asymmetric, or public key, encryption software easily available to all. This led the US Customs to make him the target of a three-year criminal investigation, because the government held that US export restrictions for cryptographic software were violated when PGP spread all around the world following its 1991 publication on the Internet as freeware. After the government dropped its case without indictment in early 1996, Zimmermann founded PGP Inc. That company was acquired by Network Associates (NAI) in December 1997, where he stayed on for three years as a Senior Fellow. In 2002, PGP was acquired from NAI by a new company called PGP Corporation, which Zimmermann now serves as special advisor and consultant. Zimmermann is also a fellow at the Stanford Law School's Center for Internet and Society.

What about my accommodation?

We will be providing accommodation to the participants from 3^rd - 5^th March. We will also take care of dinner, breakfast, lunch, etc. People registered under general category and faculty would be provided accommodation in Guest House, IIT Bombay, and students would be provided accommodation in hostels.

How to reach IIT Bombay?

IIT Bombay is located at Powai, which is in the North-Eastern part of Mumbai. One can travel by auto-rickshaws or taxis to reach IIT from the nearest stations. The nearest stations for Central Railway are Kanjur Marg or Vikhroli. The nearest station for Western Railway is Andheri.

International flights land at Sahar Airport which is about 7kms from IIT. The Domestic Airport-SantaCruz is about 10kms from IIT. Pre-paid taxis and auto-ricksaws are available at the airports.

Am I the right person to attend the workshop?

If you have done a course in computer networks and have a fairly good knowledge of Linux/Unix then you are in a comfortable position. The workshop starts from the basics and builds up gradually.

What is the duration of workshop?

SecNet 2006 is a 3-day(March 3^rd - 5^th, 2006) workshop and is organized by CSE department, IIT Bombay.
